编者按:Bridging AI to Robotics via Biomimetics

发布日期:2021-05-29 点击量:

Throughout human history, people have always fascinated about creating machines capable of mimicking human behaviors and actions. Recorded in the ancient Chinese bestiary “Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas)”, Huang Di (The Yellow Emperor) built and used navigation mobile robots in the battle against an enemy deity named Chi You some 5000 years ago. Since then, many robots, be they imaginative or actual, have been invented and recorded, such as the wooden flying birds of Lu Ban some 2500 years ago that can fly for three days without landing. People’s imagination, fantasy, and desire to invent, build, and use robots have never stopped. With the quickening pace of technological development in the past few decades, research in robotics and AI has in particular reached a new level of attention and involvement. As an intuitive approach, human beings draw their inspiration from the nature and biological systems when inventing, designing, and developing machines and algorithms in the effort to recreate and duplicate their functionalities.

Biomimetic Intelligence and Robotics (BIROB), an official journal of Shandong University, supported by the China STEM Journal Excellence Action Plan and published by Elsevier, was launched with the mission to provide a brand new venue for fast pace and high quality exchange of original research achievements, expert challenging topic surveys and reviews, and emerging new research directions and tutorials, for researchers and practitioners in the broad areas including but not limited to Biomimetics, AI, and Robotics, with related areas and fusion innovations and original applications. BIROB has gathered a group of established world leaders and rising young stars to form an elite and energetic editorial board, providing the most authoritative, unbiased, rigorous, and immediate review and selection of the submitted and invited research manuscripts.

BIROB is an open-source journal with free access and free publication. BIROB adopts a very efficient and rapid publication scheme, where the individual papers in the same volume and issue are published immediately online in digital form as they are completed in the review, revision, acceptance, and production cycle, without having to wait for all the papers to be ready. BIROB promises a processing time of no more than six weeks from the initial submission to the final publication for the thoroughly reviewed and successfully accepted papers.

Biomimetics, AI, and Robotics are all exciting research areas that are full of promises and potentials. While there are very successful demonstrations of highly capable robotic designs, mechanisms, and structures, robots that can flawlessly perform human or even child routine tasks are still rare. Robotic perception and intelligence are the bottleneck barriers of the modern intelligent robots. BIROB is aiming to stimulate, facilitate, and accelerate the research efforts with a strong biomimetic inclination. Original contributions, innovative applications, surveys, reviews, tutorials, and special issues concentrating on an interesting and challenging topic related to the broad areas of biomimetics, AI, and robotics are all welcome. Volunteers who are interested in serving as a special issue guest editor, on the editorial board, and as a reviewer for the journal are welcome to contact us. Together we can make great contributions to the development of robotics, AI and biomimetic research. Life is precious and research is priceless. May your life be healthy and happy, and your research enjoyable and fruitful!
